prayers in the Bible

Examples of different types of prayers in the Bible:

1. Prayer of Praise and Adoration:
Focus on God
and His unique eternal characteristics - Supreme Power, Splendor, Majesty, Glory, Beauty, Everlasting Love, Mercy, Grace and Compassion.
In prayer, we always start with praise and thanksgiving to God.
For example, a prayer of praise in:
Psalm 27.

2. Prayer of Penitence (asking God for forgiveness of sin): For example, Psalm 51.

3. Prayer of Petition:
Petition means to request something. Because our very lives depend upon God to sustain us, He loves to hear our requests and concerns.
For example, asking God for understanding in: Psalm 119:33-40.
Our prayers must be focused on the 'spiritual' not the 'material'.
Matt 6:33,
tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things
will be added to us. We always ask God for His will to be done, in Jesus Name.

4. Prayer of Thanksgiving:
Prayer that expresses firstly our gratitude, gratefulness, admiration and honor towards God for who He is and appreciation for everything He has given us and done for us.
For example, giving us success in proclaiming the Gospel to all nations and victory over all our enemies. For instance, thanksgiving to God for
His justice in: Psalm 9 and a prayer of thanks for
victory in: Psalm 118.

5. Prayer of Intercession:
Intercessory prayer means to pray for others and we see the best example recorded in the Bible where Jesus Christ prayed to God the Father on our behalf in John 17.

We must confess Jesus Christ is Our Lord and Saviour, Repent,
Be Baptized, Obey God's Ten Commandments, Holy Days & Weekly Sabbaths.

MATT 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God,
and his righteousness; and all these things shall be
added unto you.

DEUT 11:1 Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy
God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, always.

ACTS 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and
be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive
the gift of the Holy Ghost.

EPH 1:3 Blessed be the God & Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

I COR 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us
the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 JOHN 5:4 Because every child of God is able to
defeat the world & we win the victory over the world
by means of our faith!

BIBLE TRUTHS:PRAYER
Biblical Truths About Prayer
(Click to download)

* We devote ourselves to prayer as part of our
daily Christian walk with God, thereby dedicating our entire lives to Him:

Rom 12:12
-
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Col 4:2 - Devote yourselves to prayer, being
watchful and thankful.

*
Jesus Christ teaches us how to pray in
‘Our Lord’s Prayer’:

Matt 6:9-13
- After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

* We direct our prayers to God our Father in Jesus Name:

Eph 5:20 -
always giving thanks to God the
Father for everything, in the name of our Lord
Jesus Christ.

* Faith is a pre-requisite to answered prayer:

Matt 21:22
“If you believe, you will receive
whatever you ask for in prayer."

Mark 11:24 -
Therefore I tell you, whatever you
ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

* We are commanded to pray in private to God our Father and He rewards us:

Matt 6:6 -
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

* No repetitions:

Matt 6:7
- And when you pray, do not keep on
babbling like pagans, for they think they will be
heard because of their many words.

* We pray various kinds of prayer and we pray for all the saints:

Eph 6:18 -
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions
with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on
praying for all the saints.

2 Thess 3:1 -
Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.

1 Tim 2:1 -
I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—

Philemon 1:4 -
I always thank my God as I
remember you in my prayers.

* Prayer and thanksgiving to God:

Phil 4:6
-
Do not be anxious about anything, but
in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

* Pray on all occasions to God:

James 5:13 -
Is any one of you in trouble?
He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing
songs of praise.

* When we pray, we forgive anyone who has ever hurt us:

Matt 6:14
- For if you forgive men when they sin
against you, your heavenly Father will also
forgive you.

* Faith is a pre-requisite to healing:

James 5:15 -
And the prayer of faith shall save
the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if
he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven
him.

* The zealous and fervent prayer of a righteous
man is powerful and effective:

James 5:16 -
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

* God listens to the prayer of the righteous:

1 Pet 3:12"For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their
prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those
who do evil."

BIBLE TRUTHS:fASTING
Biblical Truths About Fasting

(Click to download)

* Fasting involves abstinence from food and drink.
In other words, going without food or certain
kinds of food for a certain period of time to show
God how serious we are about focusing on our
spiritual relationship with Him and how we rely
totally on His Power and Strength in our Christian lives.

* Do not put on a sad gloomy face so that
everyone will know you are fasting.
Instead, put oil on your head and wash your face.

Matt 6:16-18 -
"When you fast, do not look
somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure
their faces to show men they are fasting.
I tell you the truth, they have received their
reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your
head and wash your face, so that it will not be
obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to
your Father, who is unseen; and your Father,
who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

* Rip your heart, not your garments:

Joel 2:12 -
"Even now," declares the LORD,
"return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning."

* Some demons come out only by prayer and
fasting:

Mark 9:28-29 -
After Jesus had gone indoors,
his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't
we drive it out?" He replied, "This kind can come
out only by prayer."

True Fasting is described in:

Isai 58:3-14
'Why have we fasted,' they say,
'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.
Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day
for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD ? "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your
righteousness will go before you, and the glory
of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. "If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. "If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob." The mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Example of an absolute fast:

* Jesus fasted forty days and forty nights:

Matt 4:2 -
After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

* Moses fasted forty days and forty nights:

Exo 34:28
- Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.

* Daniel fasted for three full weeks abstaining
from meat and wine:

Dan 10:2-3 -
At that time I, Daniel, mourned for
three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or
wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.

Example of a partial fast:

* A day of fasting in:

1 Kings 21:9 -
In those letters she wrote:
"Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people.”

Other Biblical examples of fasting:

* Daniel:

Dan 9:3 -
So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.

* Israelites:

Neh 9:1 -
On the twenty-fourth day of the same
month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting
and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their
heads.

* Jewish people:

Esther 4:1 -
When Mordecai learned of all that
had been done, he tore his clothes, put on
sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city,
wailing loudly and bitterly.

Esther 4:3
-
And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
